Congrats Ryan and Christine!

On Friday a couple of friends who are alumni of our Bible Institute here in Owen Sound got married. It is great to see these young people start a new and exciting chapter in their lives together.

A number of their friends that they meet as students also travelled to the wedding and three were in the wedding party. As a staff person here at the BI, it is really special to see all these people who became friends for life here at our little school.

There are at least two fewer of the old barns on the marsh since my last visit home in 2004. Please let me know what you think of them!

Ministry Update - July 28

150 days until due date (and Christmas)

Dear Friends and Family,

We just wanted to write a quick update concerning Naomi’s pregnancy. She was in for another ultrasound this afternoon. Though the technician was limited in how much information she could share with Naomi, she did say that the baby’s development looks to be on track and that the placenta seems to be doing its job sufficiently. We will learn more details when Naomi goes to see the obstetrician. Hopefully, at that time we’ll also receive a better idea as to what Naomi is allowed to do physically.

We have so appreciated the many emails and words of encouragement that we’ve received from so many of you. Even more so, we thank you for your prayers on our behalf. We know that many women who experience the complications that Naomi has end up losing the baby or the baby develops abnormally. We feel prayer has made a difference. Naomi still has a long road ahead (5 months to go), so keep them coming!!

Troy and Naomi Johnstone

Tuckered out

This past Sunday morning while we were waiting to go to church, Ellie was feeling quite tired. She was walking around with one of her blankets and suddenly layed down for a few minutes.

A dark and stormy night

So I didn't get a lot of sleep last night.. We had a rather loud visitor who stopped by for an hour or so. At around 3:30 AM a big thunderstorm came through our area. The lightning was some of the loudest I have heard in years. Amazingly, Ellie slept right through it all! This is especially amazing because just walking by her room is enough to wake her up sometimes. The storm gave us about an inch of rain in a short time, so it was really coming down. Thankfully it wasn't as bad as it got a couple of weeks ago..

ISSUED BY ENVIRONMENT CANADA TORONTO
AT 10:05 PM EDT MONDAY 10 JULY 2006.

2:38 11 KILOMETERS PROBABLE TORNADO; PILOT
EAST SOUTH-EAST OF REPORTED FUNNEL TOUCHING
OWEN SOUND AIRPORT DOWN

2:58 WOODFORD FUNNEL CLOUDS SPOTTED HEADING
TOWARDS MEAFORD

This is where we live. In the past few weeks there have been quite a number of tornadoes touching down in Ontario with a few in our area (Owen Sound, Woodford, Meaford) and at least two people were killed by tornadoes in Ontario in the last week. Some of our camp staff actually saw the funnel clouds forming. Not something you want to see around your house (a prefab double-wide trailer!), especially when you have 140 campers and camp staff around too.

So last week I purchased a weather radio.

It is able to listen to Environment Canada’s weather radio service and let you know what is coming. More important than that, it has an alarm feature that will sound if there are any public warnings issued. It is programmed for our specific area so I don’t hear the alarm for other areas, and it is loud enough to wake you in the night if something is coming. So this will hopefully give us some warning and enable us to get ourselves and campers to shelter if needed.

The weather radio service has alarms for just about everything, from tornado warnings to flash floods to amber alerts (child abduction), to tsunami (not a problem where we live), to radiological hazzard, family reunion warning, blizzard warnings (definitely going to happen here), iceburg warnings (!), evacuation alerts… 75 alerts in all. It is really a comprehensive service.

Paranoid? Maybe. Common sense? Yes, I think so.

Everybody in the pool!

Ok.. maybe everyone won't fit.

We borrowed some friends pool while they were gone for a bit. But Ellie didn't really like it even though she loves her bath time.

Too cold!

Basket Ball

Forget the fancy expensive toys. Last week the most popular toy was the clothes basket, preferably if it had a few balls in it to push around and around and around.

Sometimes she will get it stuck on a piece of furniture and that is when the temper displays itself.. a couple of times she got so mad she would bite the basket!

Ministry Update - June 19

First of all, we want to thank those of you who have encouraged our hearts with your emails, phone calls and visits. What a blessing it is to know that people all around the world are bringing our situation before the throne of our Almighty Lord. In a situation that has seemed so impossible at times, we know that it is only the faithful prayers of His saints that carry us through.

Naomi was in for an ultrasound yesterday afternoon. The ultrasound was to keep tabs on the two main issues that concern her doctors.
  1. Has the abruption worsened or improved?
  2. Has the presence of the abruption affected the healthy development of the baby?
Well, it seems that Naomi’s condition has neither improved nor worsened. From what the technician could tell, the abruption was about the same. However, she was happy to see that the baby is developing normally. As well, Naomi’s placenta seems to be functioning alright, which directly affects how well the baby can develop.

We were so grateful to know that our little one is doing alright, despite less than ideal circumstances. We ask for your continued prayer for Naomi’s condition and the safety of the baby. Naomi still has to lay low. We’re so thankful for Troy’s mom, Starr, who’s been such a huge help. Please pray as we work out details for when Naomi’s mom should come down to relieve Starr.

Good News, Not So Good News

The good news: Naomi and I are very excited to announce that we are expecting our second child around December 25th! We look forward to meeting this new little person.

However, we wanted to share a prayer request with you. There have been some complications with the pregnancy. While we were on vacation in the Maritimes, we had to make some emergency runs to the hospital when Naomi started bleeding. Since then we have had several tests run to help determine what is going on. Naomi just got back from a Dr.’s appointment where she received more detail regarding her condition. She has had a placental abruption (basically a separation of the placenta from the inner wall, which has filled in with blood). This has placed her pregnancy into the high-risk category. The two main concerns are:

  • that the baby may not be able to develop properly because of a lack of nutrition, or
  • that she will lose the baby altogether.
This can also lead to other complications for Naomi’s health.

Naomi has been instructed to “do nothing”, and will be having another ultrasound next week and will be seeing an obstetrician (there is only one in Owen Sound, a town of 26,000 people).

Please pray for the health of Naomi and the baby. Please pray that Naomi will be patient and able to stick to the Dr.’s instructions. Please be in prayer for Troy as this obviously adds more to his plate.

Troy

P.S. If you are interested in more info about this condition, look here: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/placental-abruption/DS00623

France

It really annoys me to hear about the government of France condemning Israel for their attacks in Lebanon.

It is very easy for them to say such things as they sit in their relative security. They are not the victims of nearly daily terrorist attacks and rocket attacks from both within their border and from another nation. They don’t have their civilians being killed by those who want every single citizen of their nation to die. How easy for them to condemn Israel.

What would the French Government do if they were surrounded by nations that wanted to destroy them? Oh that’s right.. they pandered to those who wanted to invade until they finally were overrun by aggressive enemy armies. One big difference between Nazi Germany and Hizbullah, Islamic Jihad, Iran, Hamas, etc, etc, etc, is that they don’t merely want to occupy their land, strip it of resources and subjugate their people. They want to exterminate the Jews. Well, unlike the government of France, Israel has a backbone and they are fighting for their very existence, and they won’t take France’s lead on this.

Perhaps the French government needs to remember some recent history.. the history of hundreds of thousands of foreign troops dying on their soil to help liberate them.

Maybe France is just mad because they lost the World Cup (and just about every other international thing they get involved in).

Maybe France's politians should just keep quiet and go back to their pompous self-obsession.

end rant.

The drive

After church on Sunday, we packed up and hit the road back to Ontario. We spent the first night in northern New Brunswick in Edmundston. The next day we drove the rest of the way to Owen Sound (about 1200 KM). We had a few delays on the 401 as there were thousands of cars making their way back to Toronto after the first long weekend of the summer. There had been some very heavy rain from thunder storms throughout Ontario, so we lost about 2 hours stuck in traffic and taking side roads to get around it.

The long line of stopped cars behind us. According to the news this line stretched about 60 kilometers.

After a very long drive we were happy to be home and able to sleep in our own beds. We returned in the early morning hours of Tuesday, four weeks to the day we left for the staff conference and our vacation/deputation. It was fun, but it is nice to be home.

Midgic

On the first Sunday in July I had the privilege of speaking at the Midgic Baptist Church. Midgic is a farming community just outside of Sackville, NB, and this church is where my parents were married in... awhile ago. Anyway, it was a great to visit this church as most people know my parents and my mom's parents who attend there.
