New Camera

Awhile ago we mentioned that we had won a camera for a childrens photo contest. Well, it finally arrived and we are enjoying our new Lumix FX10 camera.

It is a nice little camera that will be good to have around the house for snapshots and short videos of the kids. As a point-and-shoot it has the inherent problems of red-eye, shutter lag and some other quirks, but it’s small size and ease of use will be nice. It is hard to stick an SLR camera in your pocket for a family outing..

So here are some samples from the new camera:

How much would you like your paycheque to be?

Who wouldn’t like to be asked that question each month? I had never been asked that question before today, but that is what I will be getting asked at the end of each month here at GoodSeed. The catch is that the amount I request is coming from whatever happens to be in our donations account.

Naomi and I will be learning a lot more about budgeting this way.. some months will see more in missionary support than others, so we have to maintain a balance to cover the months that our support will be low. This is very different from our previous missionary experience where two regular paycheques each month were based on an average of the previous year’s support and what our support goal was.

This will definitely encourage us to live more by faith as “faith missionaries”.

Ugly Ties

Since I will no longer be having to wear a tie to work each day, I was forced by a certain spouse of mine to eliminate some of my older ties. I did have quite a few as I had inherited my dad’s huge tie collection so I had a very respectable collection of unrespectable ugly ties.

I decided to offer the ties (good ones and some of the ugly ones) and some of my other dress clothes to the male students at WOLBI. On one of our trips to the dining hall I took an armload of ties and other stuff to donate. I made an announcement about what I was going to do and was immediately surrounded by wide-eyed, hungry looking young men. I felt like a wounded fish in a shark feeding frenzy with all these guys circling around me. Anyway, after the mad scramble I think everyone got something.

On the Friday of that week I heard that a new weekly tradition had started, Troy’s Ugly Tie Day.

What a legacy to leave.

The Downside of the Up

Many people are excited about the strength of the Canadian Dollar recently compared to the US buck. There are many advantages and disadvantages for businesses and individuals in Canada to these changes we have seen peak after the last several years of a rising Canadian dollar, but there is one downside most people are not aware of.. missionary support.

This does not affect Naomi and I much, but we know of several missionary families serving in Canada who are either from the US or have a significant amount of their support come from south of the border. They have seen their income decrease significantly over the last few years. Remember 5 years ago when $1000 USD equaled $1500 CDN? That exchange difference is gone now and many missionaries in Canada are feeling the hefty ‘pay cut’ because of it.

Please pray for these missionaries as they cope with these changes. And if you can, support them financially.

Ellie likes to look at the Moon and if we are outside while the Moon is visible she gets very excited and points it out to us. She recently got her first look through one of daddy’s telescopes at an almost full moon.

This is what we saw. I took this by holding my Nikon D-70 up to the eyepiece of the telescope. Not an ideal way for sure.. but for a very bright object like the moon it can work.
