Special DeLuxe

I love finding abandoned stuff. Early one morning, among the dilapidated buildings and equipment on an old abandoned farm, I found this antique 1940’s Chrysler Special DeLuxe car.

Whenever I find something abandoned like this old car, I can’t help but wonder about its history and who owned it. Seventy plus years ago, someone bought it and was likely proud of their shiny new car. It was used to drive their family around. How did this once nice car get to be in this condition? How long has it sat here?

Whatever it’s story, these old abandoned things are good reminders of the temporal nature of the shiny things in our lives.

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. Matthew 6:19-20

Beating up Dad

Anytime I happen to lay on the floor on my back I am inviting abuse from the kids, especially Ethan. Since the earliest days when he could crawl he would stop whatever else he was doing and come over, stand up by my knees, and then body slam me. This has evolved into mostly slapping followed by his coup de grĂ¢ce belly flop, all done with great pleasure as long as I make it seem like he is inflicting pain.

If Ethan keeps growing as fast as he is, he will be able to beat me up by the time he is four.

So heres to a Father’s Day of getting squished by the kids!

Ellie’s drawings

A couple of weeks ago Ellie was the Special Helper at preschool. One of the things she got to do was bring a big bag home to put a special toy or something into and then the next school day all the other kids were going to ask questions to try and guess what was inside. Ellie decided to give the person who guessed correctly a prize. At first it was a little blank piece of paper that she said they could draw on. After I suggested that it might be more meaningful if she drew something on it first, she ran off with her markers and came back with this:

She drew a connect the dots picture for the winner to complete. The picture is a tree with one branch (requiring a new number “1” for the branch). Ellie is always trying to think up of activities for everyone else to do and I thought this one was very clever and very sweet.

On the darker side, Ellie was playing a drawing game with my ipod. It has a bunch of little stamps that you can put on the screen. Things like kittens, hearts, flowers… nice stuff.

She created this:

I asked her what the picture was and she said “Someone went for a walk, and someone died.”

Either she or I need counselling.

Sleeping with bears

Sometimes in the night there is a little gremlin that sneaks out of her bed and rummages about for clothes for herself or her friends. It isn’t uncommon to find her with four layers of clothes on in the morning. The other night she sought out clothes for three vintage Care Bears (I say vintage because they are probably 20+ years old, donated to the gremlin’s collection by Auntie Alana).

With all these bears (and other dolls and animals) there is barely any room for the little night gremlin to sleep.

The question is: did Adelaine intentionally colour coordinate the shirts for the bears in the dark?
