Missionary Stories

We had the very real pleasure of meeting Gracia Burnham at an Ethnos event in Three Hills last Friday. Gracia and her husband, Martin, were missionaries in the Philippines when they were kidnapped by Muslim terrorists and they were held as hostages for over a year in the jungle. Gracia’s husband was killed in a firefight with the Philippine military at the end of the ordeal.

All of us were deeply touched by her testimony of how the Lord worked in her heart during this incredibly trying time and the work He has continued to do. What a gracious and humble woman.

Ethan wanted to go hear her the next night in another town, and over the weekend, Ellie started reading Gracia’s book, “In the Presence of my Enemies”.

Transit of Mercury 2019

Transit of Mercury!
My eldest and fellow nerd got up early to go out in the cold and observe the transit of Mercury at All-Star Telescope. Very thankful for the beautiful clear sky, especially after so many cloudy days. It was cold (-15C) but we had a great view and enjoyed the time with fellow astronomy enthusiasts. Ellie was really excited to go see it, and Naomi brought the other kids out for a short time of viewing as well.
Ellie and I stayed for the whole show, just over 3 hours, so we could watch the end of the transit. Special father-daughter time watching a rare astronomical event. Won’t see this again in North America until 2049.

Precious in the sight of the Lord…

Precious in the sight of the Lord
is the death of His saints.

Psalms 116:15

This week my heart and mind are turned to my family back home in New Brunswick.

October 22, right in the middle of a school board meeting I was chairing, I received notification that my paternal grandmother, Eileen Johnstone, passed away at the age of 92. She was a faithful servant of her Lord and Saviour, and is blessed to be in Jesus’ presence today.

She died peacefully while my younger sister sat with her, talking to her and holding her hand.

The next day, October 23rd was the one year anniversary of the death of my maternal grandfather, Clarence Wheaton (91 years old). While I was not able to attend his funeral, I had been able to visit him a few weeks earlier on a quick trip to the Maritimes.

Please pray for me as I fly back to New Brunswick Friday for the weekend to be with my family. Grandma had asked that I give a eulogy, so please pray for opportunities to share the Gospel. To that end, I am packing copies of “The Story that Matters” to hand out at the funeral. The last few days have been a bit of a scramble to prepare for the trip, find an alternate Sunday School teacher and pack.

Also, please pray for Naomi and the kids while I am away. The days are full and there are always new challenges coming along.

“We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, concerning those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, in the same way, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.”
1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

Jasper Camping Trip

Six days in Jasper National Park.
Long drives in the Canadian Rockies in JNP and BNP and many winding roads,
saw lots of elk, big horn sheep (including some young lambs), 5 bears, and maybe 5000 squirrels (might have been just two, they move really fast),
lots of dead trees from the pine beetle infestation,
Athabasca Falls,
Sunwapta Falls,
Angel Glacier, Cavall Glacier and a hike along Mt. Edith Cavall,
hiking up on Athabasca Glacer and took a drink of melting glacier water,
soaking in Miette Hot Springs,
Maligne Lake and Maligne Canyon
Peyto Lake,
deep forest hikes,
camp fires,
1000’s of photos,
and our first family game of Settlers of Cattan while it rained outside.

So thankful to God for such a beautiful creation and a wonderful family.
