Dear Friends,
As we come to the close of 2007, we look back at a year that has “dripped with the Lord’s abundance.” Amongst the hundreds of answers to prayer, we want to highlight just a few:
#1: We have experienced the Lord’s guidance and direction as we have sought His wisdom regarding our future in ministry.
#58: We are thankful for the friends and church families the Lord has provided for us. What an encouragement you all have been!
#89: Churches and individuals continue to stand behind us in prayer, financial support and through many acts of encouragement.
#125: Provision of free transportation of all our worldly goods across the country. Thank you, Bruce!
#128: Our move from Owen Sound to Olds went very smoothly. Everything made it in good shape and we had lots of help with loading and unloading the truck.
#130: Provision of a place to store all those worldly possessions at no cost until we find a place to rent.
#132: Provision of temporary housing with Naomi’s parents until we can find a place to rent in the New Year.
#141: The girls made the transition to their new home quite smoothly and happily. They are enjoying more time with Grandma and Papa.
#153: A good time of teaching and encouragement at a recent GoodSeed staff conference. We also enjoyed connecting with our coworkers from other parts of Canada and the United States.
#179: We can see the availability of housing increasing. Already, we’ve had a number of offers for a place to rent.
#306: Opportunities to share our ministry with others continue to pop up. This month we were able to share with First Baptist Church in Olds and New Sweden Mission Church in Wetaskiwin.
One in Sixty Update:
We are encouraged in GoodSeed to seek out sixty partners in ministry. These partners are not just financial supporters, but those who will faithfully pray for us and seek to assist us in many other practical ways. The Lord has provided for us 31 partners in ministry. This includes individuals from across North America and a number of churches. We’re so thankful for this team of men and women who have chosen to stand behind us and enable us to “do the work of the ministry.” If you would like more information on how you can join our team, please contact us or the GoodSeed office.
Prayer Requests:
We’d appreciate your prayers in the following areas:
- provision of affordable housing
- others to desire to partner with us in this ministry
- for Troy as he learns the various aspects of his job
- effectiveness in our ministry
- more workers willing to join GoodSeed full time to help with the spread of the Gospel

Ellie is now an energetic, 2½ year-old chatterbox. In true western fashion, she loves tractors, trains, airplanes and animals of all kinds. She can’t wait for more snow to come and loves her time spent outdoors playing in it. She has a strong will, but also a sweet personality. It is a joy to watch her discover and grow. She is having to learn many lessons in sharing and playing with Adelaine, but for the most part, loves being a big sister.

Adelaine, 1 year old in December, is eager to be doing whatever Ellie is doing. She crawls with great gusto and, we’re sure, hopes to be walking soon in order to better keep up with her sister. She also has a sweet personality–very mild and laid back. She likes to be in the center of everything and isn’t shy about going to strangers. She loves to cuddle with whoever is willing to hold her.

We love our two girls dearly and pray they will grow up to love and follow Jesus.
Thanks for your interest in our ministry with GoodSeed

Dear Friends,
It’s almost time for our big move! We have grown in many directions as we have served here and we will look back with fondness on our time at Word of Life. The school grew in just about every way this past year, for which we praise the Lord.
This month we saw the fifth class of students (our largest yet) graduate. They have been an effective class for the Lord, with over 180 salvation decisions made through their ministry outreaches during the school year. It has been exciting to be a part of their lives. We pray they have learned and grown much and will continue to be faithful in their service to others. Troy will continue in the office into the middle of September, helping year six get started.
Westward Ho
With the help of Naomi’s mom, Naomi and the girls will fly to Calgary on September 30. Troy will arrive a few days later with Naomi’s dad in the van. At least we hope it will go that smoothly. There are still a few details to be worked out concerning the transportation of all our worldly goods among other things, but we are excited to see things falling into place. The Lord has certainly been good to us.
Specific Prayer Requests
- that all the details involved in this big move would come together and nothing would be overlooked
- safe and uneventful travels
- a smooth transition into our new life, as a family and as missionaries
- guidance and provision as we look for a place to rent or buy
- that we would reach our goal of 60 prayer and financial partners
Thank You
Those two words seem so paltry for the gratefulness in our hearts to those of you who have stood behind us for these last five years. We have been blessed again and again as you have encouraged our hearts in many different ways. We look forward to updating you in another few months on the great things the Lord has done for us as we begin our ministry with GoodSeed.
Thank you for your prayers and support!

Johnstone's Journey - April Prayer Letter
6 Comments Published on Tuesday, May 01, 2007 at 10:22 AM.As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God... If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 4:10-11Dear Friends and Family
Several months ago, I was taking promotional photographs of some of our students. As we were setting up the camera equipment and positioning people for the shot, one of the students asked me, “Why aren’t you doing photography as a ministry?” I replied, “Because the Lord hasn’t called me to do that.” Little did I know that just a few days later, the Lord would indeed call me to do that very thing.
After five years of serving the Lord with Word of Life Fellowship Canada in the Bible Institute ministry, Naomi and I will be starting a new journey of service. This fall,we will be joining the missionary staff of GoodSeed International.
The Decision
Throughout most of my life I never considered myself a creative person (overactive imagination excluded). But over the last seven years I have learned that I enjoy writing and that I have a passion and an eye for photography. However, with my history of administrative work I was very surprised to have the opportunity to minister with GoodSeed in their creative department. It was something I hadn’t really considered, but the more I have thought about it, the more it fits. Others have recognized this too. When my supervisor here at WOL heard what I would be doing, he said, “Troy, this is you!”
That doesn’t mean that it was an easy decision. We have really enjoyed our ministry with WOL and the fellowship of our coworkers and students. We wish we could be in two places at once! There were many things to think about: moving to Alberta, attending a different church, having to buy or rent a place to live in a crazy housing market, a radically different role for me, but of first importance... Is this what God would like us to do? After several months of prayer and discussion with close friends, we decided that, yes, God is calling us to make this change of ministry. And now we are excited to see how God is going to use us in and through GoodSeed.
As part of the Creative Ministry Team, I will be helping the ministry of GoodSeed as a writer, photographer and videographer (shooting and editing video) as we create tools to share the Gospel through books, video and the internet.
What does our future hold?
Along with this change come some challenges. We plan to continue working with WOL preparing for the start of a new school year. Then in September we will pack up and, after Troy helps teach an evangelism seminar at WOLBI using GoodSeed materials, we will begin the process of moving to Alberta and finding a place to live.

Below are some challenges we face in the next six months:
- We are praying that the Lord will provide housing for us, as there is currently 100% occupancy in Olds, Alberta (the location of GoodSeed’s Canadian office) and even renting is now very expensive.
- Troy will need to undergo extensive training for the new type of ministry he will have even while we are getting our family settled in this new location.
- GoodSeed is a non-profit ministry and as missionaries, we will continue to be supported the same way any other missionary would be if they were working overseas. We rely upon churches and friends to make our participation possible. GoodSeed does not deduct administrative expenses—100% of what is designated for us will go to our support. We are currently at 75% of our support needed for working with GoodSeed. Pray that the Lord will raise up those who will partner with us to make the difference. If you are interested in supporting us in our ministry with GoodSeed, please look at the box below for more detail.
- If you have any questions about this change in our ministry, please feel free to email us at troy.johnstone@gmail.com.
Feedback from WOLBI students whom Troy helped teach using GoodSeed materials:
“It has taught me so much more about God. I never really connected things up before now. Now I actually understand how everything came together. I really appreciate being taught about [the Gospel]. I can now talk more about God’s Word to people, because I understand it so much better!”
“I learned a lot of how things tie together that I did not know before. Answers to questions that I was afraid I would not be able to answer if someone asked me to explain something...”
“This study has been beneficial because I have had some doubts to the truth of the Bible lately. I know that there is mountains of evidence that points to the truth of the Bible, but by taking this course, I know that God has his hand in everything and that this book cannot be anything but truth… It has helped to clarify certain things in the Bible that I was struggling with.”
“It’s all new to me, but it’s so helpful to think I can use it to help my non-Christian family.”
What is GoodSeed?

Along with Word of Life, GoodSeed International is passionately committed to sharing the Gospel of Christ clearly with this lost world. GoodSeed believes in the need to be crystal clear on the Bible’s primary message, the Gospel, and being able to pass it on in a way that makes sense. To that end GoodSeed is committed to:
1. creating tools
GoodSeed produces materials that present a Creation to Christ approach to sharing the Gospel, laying down a foundation about God and His holy character before presenting Jesus Christ. We provide materials that are sensitive to different ages, settings, cultural and religious backgrounds, the illiterate, and such groups as the seeing impaired. Our goal is to translate culturally contextualized materials into all major and many smaller language groups.
GoodSeed has materials for use here in Canada, including materials geared for those from Muslim and Polytheistic backgrounds. We are producing materials for children, teens, ESL (English as a Second Language), correspondence courses, DVDs, audio CDs, visual aides for teaching, and many other materials. There is a constant stream of products being translated in languages from all over the world.
2. teaching people how to use those tools
Seminars are conducted around the world to train pastors, missionaries and lay people in how to use these evangelism tools. For the last few years Troy has helped teach this seminar at WOLBI to our students.

precious baby girl
He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young. Is. 40:11
How graciously the Lord has led us these past six months since Naomi’s complications first began. Adelaine’s full term arrival is a miracle to us and we thank the Lord for His goodness. Already, we can’t imagine life without her! Naomi’s labour went quite well and she is recovering quickly. Adelaine has been a very content baby thus far. Ellie is quite excited about her little sister and loves to watch her and help mommy and daddy care for her. She often mimics what we do with Adelaine when she plays with her dolls. We’re so grateful for her enthusiastic acceptance of her new little sibling.
Ellie meets Adelainebusy months ahead..
The students arrived back January 3 before heading down to New York for a challenging two-day Missions Conference at our main campus. Their time there resulted in many life-changing decisions being made, with over twenty students expressing a desire to serve the Lord in ministry.
The big challenge of this quarter is Snow Camp. Beginning on January 26, the students will be heavily involved in these six weekends of ministry to teens.
From March 9-19, Troy will be leading a group of students on the first WOLBI missions trip to Jamaica for ten days. They will be doing Bible clubs, open air evangelism and other outreaches into the community.
extreme makeover: basement edition
We feel as thrilled with our new basement room as those people on the reality TV show! It was incredible to see the Lord use you, His church, to bless us in so many different ways. In the end, we received just the right amount of money, came in just under budget, and the workers completed far more than we ever imagined. Ellie napped right through the banging and sawing and our hearts were encouraged and uplifted by the gifts we received and the men who came to help us out. To the right is a before and after photo of our basement. For a better look at this huge blessing, visit www.troyandnaomi.com/2006/12/extreme-makeover-basement-edition.html
Please pray:
- for energy and stamina for the students during this busy quarter.
- for Troy, as he pulls together the many details necessary to make the trip to Jamaica a success.
- the students would be a blessing and would be challenged in their own lives.
- for Naomi, as she stays home alone with Ellie and Adelaine during this time.

...for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the heart knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
Romans 8:26-28
DEAR FAMILY AND FRIENDS,
The verse above has held very deep meaning for us these last few months. As we have sought to trust the Lord in our circumstances, we have gained a deeper appreciation for the Comforter and Interceder the Lord has given us.
BASEMENT PROJECT
As we shared in our last prayer letter, we are hoping to finish a part of our basement to make room for the newest little Johnstone. You responded with great generosity. We are happy to tell you that we’ve had enough funds come in to enable us to complete the first phase (enclosing the basement for an office/guest room) of this project. Thank you so much for enabling us in this area. We are hoping to have it completed by the end of November, when a work team from Olds, AB plans to come to assist us.
NAOMI’S PREGNANCY
We also shared with you some serious complications Naomi had encountered in her pregnancy. Considering the risks associated with the pregnancy, we are amazed and excited to tell you that it’s progressing well. Our moms have been such a help, taking turns staying with us to help out with Ellie and around the house. Naomi is now 7 months along, due December 25. When Naomi first had the placental abruption, the haematoma covered an area of 15 cm. This was a huge abruption according to our doctor and the odds of the pregnancy continuing to where it is now were not good. According to the latest ultrasound, the area of the haematoma has shrunk to 2 cm! What a huge answer to prayer! In fact, Naomi was told at her most recent appointment that she can feel free to resume normal levels of activity as she’s able. We are very thankful to the Lord for this and grateful to you who have prayed so faithfully with us.
TEACHING FAITHFUL MEN & WOMEN TO TEACH OTHERS ALSO
The Lord has also certainly answered our prayers regarding a good class for this year. We currently have 46 students and they seem eager to learn, grow and minister.
Troy had the opportunity once again to help teach a week of classes to prepare them to clearly share their faith. He and John Cross taught through By This Name, a book GoodSeed is developing to communicate the Gospel in our post-modern era.
[for a full report on this event, please click here]
The group just completed their week of Open Air Evangelism in Toronto and Hamilton. They returned with many stories of what they learned and how the Lord enabled them to speak with so many about their faith. More than 35 adults and children expressed a desire to trust Christ as their Savior, for which we thank the Lord.
Last weekend, our students attended our annual Youth Missions Extravaganza, a day dedicated to challenging young people to consider what their role may be in reaching others for Christ. Seventeen of our students expressed a desire to be involved in missions in some capacity. We look forward to seeing what the Lord will do in their lives over the coming year!
Ellie’s Corner: Ellie continues to grow and learn new things daily. We talk to her often about the coming baby and how she’ll be a big sister, however she’s a bit young to understand. Ellie is still a very laid-back, cheerful girl. She loves to find a cloth and “clean” around the house. Mommy hopes this trend continues. She has loved having her grandmas around. She also enjoys being around the students, though she is a bit shy. They seem to enjoy her too—we’ve had many offers to babysit.
Thank you for your prayers and support.

August 2006 Prayer Letter - Plans and Proposals
0 Comments Published on Friday, August 11, 2006 at 12:39 PM.It’s interesting for us to see how the Lord directs and guides our steps along the way. We were planning to head to Alberta for Christmas this year, but it seems the Lord has other very special plans for us. On December 25 we are expecting a new addition to our family! We look forward to meeting this new little person.
With this change in plans, we’d like to share some other “changes to plans” and prayer requests with you.
BUILDING PLANS
With baby #2 on the way we will have to do some room-shuffling. We plan to put the baby in our office/guest room. However, we have a lot of visitors and really do need the office space.
With this in mind, we would like to build a room in our basement to act as our office and guest room, as well as a small bathroom. Because we rent our home from Word of Life, this has been deemed a special project for which we must raise funds. We have broken the project up into two phases. Phase 1: Enclose the basement for an office/guest room. Phase 2: Install a bathroom. The first phase has been estimated to cost about $4500. We will finish each phase as the Lord supplies the finances.
If you wish to help us with this, we would really appreciate it. As with any funds directed toward our ministry, please make out cheques to Word of Life, with a memo that it be used toward the “Johnstone Basement Project” so you may receive a tax-deductible receipt.
NOT NECESSARILY IN OUR PLANS...
Naomi’s pregnancy has not been without complications. Currently she has to stay off her feet much of the time due to a placental abruption she experienced during our trip to New Brunswick. This serious condition places both her and baby at risk. Troy’s mother, Starr, has been staying with us and has been so helpful. Naomi’s mom, Janice Cross, plans to join us in August after Starr leaves to help around the house. Please be in prayer for us. We specifically ask that you pray that the abruption would stabilize and that the baby would continue to develop healthily and normally to full term.
YEAR FIVE, HERE WE COME
We are very encouraged with our number of applicants for the Fall. We are hoping for between 35 and 45 students. However, more important than “numbers,” we pray that each student would truly desire to learn and grow.
We have enjoyed having Ben from Troy’s home church here the past two years as he attended the BI and then ministered on the Impact Team. Now we look forward to having two students from Naomi’s home church with us this coming year.
CAMP SEASON
Word of Life is not just a Bible Institute. Among other ministries, we run Summer Camps and Winter Camps in which our students play a vital role. We are halfway through our current summer camping season. It is wonderful to hear the reports of changed hearts and lives. So far, we have seen over 100 kids put their trust in Jesus as Saviour for which we are so thankful.
Ellie’s Corner: Our little baby girl is no longer! In her place is a busy little toddler. She babbles non-stop about who-knows-what and brings us so much joy. More of her independent nature and unique personality emerge each day. During the day she enjoys the outdoors, playing in her sandbox and with her balls. In the evening she and daddy enjoy storytime together. We pray for wisdom as we teach her, discipline her and love her.

On Sunday, August 21, we graduated our third class. Only a few weeks later, we welcomed our fourth year. This year’s class is smaller – 25 students – but we already see them making up for their small size with their huge desire to minister to those around them. The first week of October, the entire class made the annual trip to Toronto and other neighbouring cities for Open Air Evangelism (OAE). During their 5 days there we were excited to hear of the students’ boldness and strong desire to share the Gospel with others. It is hard to quantify the impact of their time on this trip, but they believe that at least 30 came to know the Lord and hundreds more were exposed to knowledge about God of which they were previously ignorant. We pray the Lord will continue to work in the lives of all those touched by this ministry.
Troy continues to find more work than time at his office. He has two great interns working for him in Admissions, which we’re thankful for. We are trusting the Lord for 45+ students for our fifth year of operation. To reach this goal requires a lot of time and work. Would you pray even now that we will meet this goal? If you know of someone who would benefit from a year spent studying God’s Word (isn’t that all of us?), please contact us for materials that you can pass on to them or better yet, arrange for them to attend one of the Campus Days events scheduled throughout the year.
Naomi spends her days trying to keep up with Ellie. Our daughter brings us so much joy. She has such a happy disposition and often has us laughing with her funny antics. Naomi still has a hand in a few graphic design projects, as well as the school yearbook.
We keep so busy and find that time passes with us hardly conscious of it. When we watch news of one tragedy after another, we are reminded of the importance of investing our time wisely in that which is eternal. We want our lives to count for eternity, not simply for the temporal. Will you pray that we would be discerning in how we spend our time and to which good things we should commit our time?
The Squeak’s Squawk: (“The Squeak” is a nickname of Ellie’s)

You won’t believe how big I’m getting! Mommie says I wear 12 month clothes even though I’m only 7 months. I think that’s pretty big. I love it when I get to visit with my Grandpa and Grandma and Nanna and my aunts and uncle. I like to talk to people and tell them everything that’s going on. Mommie says I’m very nosy, but I just don’t want to miss anything! I love to squeal and giggle, especially when Daddyplays peek-a-boo with me. My favourite toy is whatever anyone else is holding. I’m pretty sure Mommie and Daddy think I’m very special.
Praise the Lord with us for:
- We’ve gained a few new supporters!
- Ellie’s healthy and normal development.
- The Lord’s hand in bringing us the students He did for this school year. They have been an encouragement to us!
- We would reach our goal of 45+ students in the ‘06-’07 student body.
- Wisdom as we choose from the many opportunities to be involv ed in the Lord’s work. We can’t do it all.
- Wisdom as we raise Ellie. Our greatest desire is that she trust the Lord as her Saviour at a young age.
- For our local church, as we continue to seek a pastor.

A Few Details...
After a relatively smooth labour, Ellie entered the world at 12:22pm on Saturday, March 12. The next few days were a mix of three words: overjoyed, overwhelmed, overtired. Through it all, we cherish our daughter more each day. We were thankful to have family here with us to lend a hand we’re not sure what we would have done without them. Please pray for wisdom as we seek to raise Ellie to be a godly woman.
In Other NewsOther news? Didn’t the world stop just for this event? Perhaps not. And as we take a look at our ministry, we are encouraged with the things the Lord is doing in the lives and hearts of our students.
Troy’s big project this Spring was to launch a new website for Word of Life Canada. We’d appreciate it if you would take a look at it (go to www.wol.ca) and let us know what you think and how we can improve on it. Troy is looking at a busy Summer ahead. Another year at the Word of Life Bible Institute is almost complete and we look forward to meeting the students the Lord sends our way for the fourth year of the school. We are praying for 45 students. Would you pray with us that we would meet this goal?
Though Ellie consumes most of Naomi’s time at present, Naomi still helps in the area of graphic design. Please pray with us for the energy and wisdom this requires as she tries to balance new and old responsibilities.
We plan to travel out West this Summer from July 12 - August 2. We’d love to be able to visit as many people as possible and share our ministry in several churches as well. Please let us know if you’d like us to stop by and visit with you or share in your church. We’d love the opportunity to catch up and also introduce our little girl to our friends in the West!

Support Update:
We are thankful for the Lord’s provision. We’ve had several more people partner with us financially, increasing our overall support. We would also like to thank all of you who have helped us out financially or with gifts for Ellie. In the end, we’ve had to purchase very few items ourselves. What a blessing this has been!
Previous support level: 80%
Current support level: 85-90% approx.
Approx. amount left to raise: $300/mo
As always, your prayer support is vital to the effectiveness of our ministry. We have seen the Lord’s hand at work in so many ways and we know that your prayers have a major part in this.

Ellie Trivia:
Birth Weight: 7lb, 14oz;
Length: 20
What’s in a Name: Ellie means light. She has been a light in our lives and we pray that she will be the same to others as she shines the light of Christ into their hearts. Ellie’s two middle names are for her grandmas.
First Impressions: The general consensus is that Ellie looks like her daddy. She certainly has his long fingers and toes.
Ellie loves to stick her tongue out. In fact her tongue spends most of it’s time outside her mouth we call it her third lip. We’re not sure who she takes after in this regard.
Ellie is a very contented baby. She has been sleeping through the night now for over a month. Her parents can’t begin to express their excitement at this development!

added responsibilities
...same amount of time. As of January 1, Troy took on some new responsibilities at the Bible Institute, as well as a new title — Bible Institute Administrator. The new responsibilities mean Troy has less time for his old job as Admissions Coordinator, but two interns have joined our staff to help in that area. Please pray for Troy as he seeks to lead and train these young men and balance his new workload.
Naomi has also taken on new tasks. She now does almost all of the graphic design work for WOL, from Snow and Summer Camp brochures, to special mailings and the school yearbook.
We currently have 37 students enrolled at the BI. For seven weekends this quarter, they will serve in our Snow Camp program. Classes during the week and Snow Camp on the weekend makes for busy students. Please pray for the students as they seek to take their classroom experience and pour it into the lives of campers.

healthy as a horse
A second MRI in November came back clear, so for now Naomi’s doctor seems satisfied that nothing serious is wrong. At this point, her guess is that the numbness Naomi experiences is a side effect of working at a computer for long periods of time. We’re just very thankful that it seems to be nothing serious. Thank you for your prayers.

We are grateful for a good local church. We’ve enjoyed getting to know the people there and developing some friendships. We both teach Sunday school and lead a small Bible study group. Troy serves as a deacon and Naomi plays her violin on occasion.
great is His faithfulness
We have been blessed to see our support increase over the past year. Currently, we are around 82% of our support goal of $3000/month. We are so grateful to those of you who give faithfully.
As always, we covet your prayers on our behalf. We plan to send short ministry updates via both email and snail mail to help keep you current. If you would like to receive these updates, please let us know. It is encouraging to hear from you that you are praying for us!
We pray that you will experience the riches of His grace this year.

New News from the Johnstone's
If you were to ask us, “What’s new with the Johnstone's?” you’d probably end up talking to us for a long time...
Our most exciting new news is the expected addition of our first child to our family! We are looking forward to this new baby due in mid-March. We thank God for this wonderful blessing. Please pray with us that things would progress along safely.
New BI Class
On September 10, thirty-seven new students enrolled for our third year of our Bible Institute. They seem to be a very talented and keen group of people. We look forward to seeing the growth and change the Lord brings about in their lives as they study God’s Word and get involved in ministries at Word of Life Bible Institute.
New Home
We look forward to moving from our apartment into a house across campus late this Fall. This move will provide us with the additional space we need as our family grows. With this new location, our rent will also increase, so we trust the Lord to provide as He sees fit.
The Lord has gone before us and provided us with a new-to-us vehicle, a ‘97 Dodge Caravan. It is a gift from Naomi’s parents and is in great condition. The van will be much more practical for helping students out when they need a ride someplace. And what a blessing it will be when the baby arrives!
New Pastor?
We would appreciate your prayers as our church seeks a new pastor. After 10 years of faithful service, the Lord led our previous pastor on to another church. This situation keeps Troy busy, as he is currently serving as Chairman of the Deacon’s Board, and is on the Pastoral Search Committee. Troy will also have more teaching and preaching opportunities at the church. Would you pray for stamina and wisdom for Troy as he fills these roles? Please also pray that the men in leadership would have discernment as they seek to find a godly man to fill this role.

We were able to visit family and friends in the Maritimes this past June. It was a great time. We even got a chance to travel with Troy's mom to Cape Breton for a few days. What a beautiful part of our country. For more pictures from our vacation, click here. |
New Support Needs
With a baby on the way and other new expenses, we are feeling the crunch. We know that life will only get more expensive from here on. We are at 80% of our current support goal of $3000/month. We would like to see our goal met fully in the next few months as we prepare for our new arrival. This means we need to raise $600 more per month, the equivalent of 30 people each giving $20. Would you pray with us for increased financial and prayer support?
New Challenges
So, we are facing many exciting and challenging days ahead. More than ever, we are aware that we could not fulfil this ministry without you who faithfully stand behind us. Thank you for your constant support, prayers, and encouragement.
Troy & Naomi Johnstone

We were refreshed and encouraged at our staff conference in June. Pictured here are most of the Word of Life Canada staff, representing both the English and French divisions of our ministry. We thank God for the ministry He has given us to do and those who work side-by-side with us in this endeavour.
Naomi enjoys teaching Sunday School for Grades 2 and 3 kids. She also helps out in various other ways around our church.

Naomi had an opportunity to play for the wedding of some friends of ours.

Naomi pours a lot of her time and energy into creating a yearbook for the students each year. The students above have just received their own copies and are eagerly looking through this great collection of memories. We trust this book will encourage them and remind them of all the things they learned throughout the year here.
Once again, Troy had an opportunity to help teach a Creation-to-Christ method of evangelism using the book The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus. This class, taught at the beginning of the year, gives our students a strong foundation as they seek to deepen their knowledge of the Bible. It's also essential in helping them clearly communicate the Gospel to those whom they will be ministering during the year.

Colossians 1:9-10
Dear Family and Friends
The first year of the Canadian Extension of the Word of Life Bible Institute is almost over. Classes finished on May 30, and the students are having a break before returning for the summer ministry quarter. This is an important part of the year for our students as they begin to take what they have learned in the classroom and pour it into the lives of young people at our summer camp. For much of the year the students have felt like they are drinking from a fire hose! They have covered a lot of material, and now they have a bit of time to think about what they have learned in the classroom and at the same time try to help campers deal with real life situations.
Please continue to pray for our students! They are not the same people they were when they arrived last September, and it is our hope that they continue increasing in the knowledge of God this summer.
Health Update
Thank you for your prayers concerning Naomi's health. The mysterious symptoms that she was experiencing seem to be gone now, but the doctors were never able to figure out what the problem was, even after blood tests, a CT scan, Doppler ultrasound and a MRI. They think that the symptoms may have been a side effect of some medication that Naomi was taking several months ago, but they have now gone away. Thank you, Lord!
Our Personal Ministry
These past few months Naomi has spent countless hours working on the Yearbook. She even dreams about it at night! Thankfully she has had some students who have helped to put the memories of this first year on paper. We pray that the yearbook will help our students to remember what they learned here at the Bible Institute.
Now that the academic year is done, I am switching gears to focus more on admissions for next year. We currently have 20 more applications than we had last year, but we have a long way to go. We are praying for 50-55 students for this September!
Local Church
Naomi and I have been blessed with a local church here in Owen Sound that we can be involved with. I have been helping teach the Teen Sunday School class and am the leader of a small group of adults who will be meeting every second week for Bible study, prayer and fellowship. We are very thankful for finding a solid church in which we can be challenged, encouraged and also serve God.
As we review the year gone by, we would like to thank all of you who have stood with us and cared for us through your prayers, letters of encouragement and financial support. Truly, this is a team effort and we sincerely believe that you will also partake in heaven's rewards for your part in our ministry.
That the Lord may receive all the glory,
Our Calendar:
June 13 - Fly to Alberta to visit family, friends & churches.
June 22 - Speaking at Olds First Baptist Church
June 30 - Return to Owen Sound
Aug. 17 - BI Graduation
Sep. 12 - BI Registration for our next class!

In a bold move, Troy William Johnstone shocked the world by asking Naomi Leigh Cross of Olds, Alberta to marry him. Troy and Naomi met two years ago at the Word of Life Bible Institute in Schroon Lake, New York where they were both attending the one-year Bible program. Troy reports that it was an instant hit, at least for him. Naomi reportedly took much more convincing.
Troy
Troy grew up in the small town of Sackville, New Brunswick. His parents, Bill and Starr Johnstone, raised him in a loving, Christian home. After graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce from Mount Allison University, Troy worked in several different jobs. He became involved with his church in various capacities, acting as chairman of the Missions Committee for a length of time. For the past year and a half, Troy has been on deputation with Word of Life Fellowship, with the desire to serve the Lord in full-time ministry. He will assist WOL in starting a one-year Bible school in Ontario. This school will be vital in giving young adults a solid Biblical foundation.
Naomi
Naomi is the daughter of John and Janice Cross of Olds, Alberta. She had the privilege of growing up in a missionary family serving in Florida and Papua New Guinea with New Tribes Missions. John Cross was involved in developing the Summit short term missions program as well as writing/directing several award winning movies (“Ee-taow!”). Eventually, the Lord led him to write a book called The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus and start a new ministry, GoodSeed. For the last few years, Naomi has been serving in this ministry doing computer layout and design for various GoodSeed projects. She has been involved in the creation of a companion Workbook and a youth edition for “The Stranger.”
East Meets West
Naomi and Troy were first introduced to each other through some mutual friends at Bible School.
A summer of working as camp counselors in Owen Sound at the Word of Life camp provided the unofficial couple more time to become better acquainted. Unfortunately for them, the summer came to a close, and it was time for Troy to go home to New Brunswick and Naomi and her brother to move to Alberta, the other side of the country!
After months of communicating via email and telephone, Troy moved to Alberta in May of 2001 to spend time with Naomi and her family while preparing to serve full time with Word of Life. Finally, on the night of December 17th, Troy dropped down on one knee and asked Naomi to become his wife. Naomi reports that it was very sweet and very romantic! Troy has been frequently heard quoting Scripture out of Proverbs. “He who finds a wife finds a good thing; And obtains favor from the LORD.”
The couple has set their wedding date for April 27, 2002. That doesn’t give Naomi very long to plan! They are both very excited about the future God has in store for them.
Eastward Ho!
After a short honeymoon, they plan to head across country to New Brunswick, stopping in Ontario for a few days. They will spend five weeks with friends, family and churches in New Brunswick. Please pray for them, that God would raise up those who would become prayer and financial partners in their ministry.
Troy’s main focus at the Bible Institute will be in the area of Administration, Admissions, Alumni, Marketing and general discipleship among the students. Naomi plans to support and assist Troy in their ministry with Word of Life, taking on any responsibilities that she can to assist Word of Life.
Troy and Naomi realize that there will be many adjustments in this next year with moving to a new town, working with new people and of course, adjusting to life together. They ask for your thoughts and prayers for the future.
Praise:
- For providing Troy with a new job for his remaining time in Alberta. Naomi
has a new job as well, working every second week in the church office. This
schedule allows Naomi to spend every other week focused on her work with
GoodSeed.
- They were able to obtain a much needed laptop for use both in the office
and on the road.
Pray:
- That Troy and Naomi’s wedding would go smoothly.
- For safety in travelling.
- For special and profitable times with family and friends along the way.
- That they would be able to raise their support to the needed level. (Note:
They need to raise $1500 / month.)
- That people would commit to praying for them in their ministry and new
marriage.

Prayer Letter - Sept. 2001
Published on Saturday, September 01, 2001 at 1:47 PM.but the LORD directeth his steps.
Proverbs 16:9
I have found this to be the case over and over in my life, and once again, there has been a change of plans. In talking to Gary Stairs, the Executive Director of Word of Life Canada, it was decided that I should continue to work on my deputation and paying off my Student Loan. The plan is to start full time ministry next Spring/Summer instead of this Fall.
Two years ago when I decided to go to the Bible Institute, I only had five months before class started - not enough time to set aside the money to cover the cost of tuition. At that time, I made the decision to get a student loan to cover most of the costs of the school. After I had completed my year of studies, I was in discussions with WOL about serving with them and the issue of my student loan was examined. It was determined that I would take the next year to work on deputation and pay off as much of the loan as I could. One month after that meeting, my father was admitted to the hospital and was in and out of a comma until his death this past January. It goes without saying that during this time I was not able to make additional payments on my loan.
With these issues in mind, it was recently decided by Gary that I should continue to work here in Alberta until Summer of 2002 to continue working on my loan and raising support.
The Lord has been faithful in helping me to do this by providing for me financially through many different people. A couple from the church here is allowing me to live in their basement rent-free and another family is looking after feeding this hungry young man. By His grace, I have been able to put down a significant amount on the loan already.
These additional months out here will allow me a little more time as I prepare for full time ministry. Right now my support is at 47% of my goal and I hope to be able to continue deputational work while here in the West. I have been able to make a number of contacts and have had the opportunity to share my ministry with a church. Please pray that I will have many more opportunities to share my ministry with others.
Another issue facing me and Word of Life Canada is that the ministry is virtually unknown in Alberta. In fact, there is a church here with the same name but with very different beliefs. Whenever I mention Word of Life, it is assumed that I am with this group until I fully explain the difference. I hope to be able to increase awareness of the ministry of Word of Life and the new school and put information into the hands of area pastors. Much of this will be foundational work for all of Word of Life’s ministries for others to build on as the ministry expands in this area. I have already had a few inquiries about the school and Word of Life in general and look forward to continuing this work.
It was also decided that some of the immediate needs of the B.I. project can be performed by me from here. In the coming months I will be working to contact prospective students as well as trying to track down Word of Life alumni that are residing in Canada.
It is my hope that the Lord will use me and help me to minister effectively during my time here in Alberta.
Thank you to each one of you who has kept me in your prayers. Many thanks also to you who support me financially. May God bless you all abundantly.

Prayer Letter - May 2001
Published on Tuesday, May 01, 2001 at 1:54 PM.On May 20th I will be starting a two-week road trip that will end in Olds, Alberta. An opportunity has arisen to move to Alberta for a few months and while there I will be continuing my work on raising support. I have some missionary friends who have a number of contacts with churches in Alberta and I will be meeting up with our WOL area missionary out west to promote the new Bible Institute.
While on the way out west, I’ll be stopping in at the office in Owen Sound. It isn’t very often that I get to visit the staff there and get caught up with all the progress on the Bible Institute project and all the other things happening with Word of Life Canada. I really look forward to meeting my fellow staff and I look forward to being able to get started on the project myself!
Please pray for me as I move out west for:
- Safety as I travel to and around in Alberta,
- Opportunities to share my ministry and that my prayer and financial support would continue to grow,
- A job while I am in Alberta
On April 19, 20th weekend I traveled to the Schroon Lake campus with 8 prospective students from the Maritimes who wanted to see what the Bible Institute was all about. As part of the weekend activities, we were able to sit in on two classes where we studied a section of the book of Romans (taught by resident faculty Dr. Tom Davis) and Ecclesiastes (taught by that week’s guest lecturer, Mike Calhoun). I think it was a great experience for these young people to get a small glimpse of what it would be like to take a year and study the Word of God! One of them gave testimony that she hadn’t been sure what she wanted to do next year, but after attending the class on the book of Romans, she was putting in her application because she knew that she had go to Bible school for a year to study the Word!
16 Months To Go
The countdown continues for the opening of the Bible Institute. Recently some representatives of the school met with an association of local pastors to discuss the possibilities of students helping within their churches as part of their school year ministry. The pastors were quite excited about the possibility of having these Bible students to help with the various programs in their churches.
Praise God!
- We have had our first student applications come in! Pray that we have at least fifty students for our first school year.
- Three new supporters in the last few weeks.
- I was able to share my ministry with three churches in the last month in Bathurst, Truro and here in Sackville.
In His service,
Troy Johnstone
