20140212-Israel-1759-Edit

I have been back from my Israel and Germany trip for a couple weeks now and I’m still trying to sort in my brain the number of things I saw in Israel, just like I’m trying to sort the 7500+ photos that I took.

My brother-out-law, Andrew, has just finished his masters degree in Ancient Near East History at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem where he has been studying the last few years. Andrew was an excellent guide for me and his parents as he showed us around Israel. We were able to benefit from Andrew’s knowledge of the area, the history and archeology (and his ability to speak Hebrew) as he guided us around the country for 9 days.

And we did see a lot of the country! The blue lines on this Google Earth map show the routes we took, many of which are off the beaten path and deep into the West Bank to see locations most people don’t get to.

From walking on the Temple Mount, to standing on the shores of the Dead Sea, from modern battlefields to ancient fortifications and cities many thousands of years old, to visiting the first cave where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found (photo below), we got a glimpse of the rich history of these Bible lands.

This trip also took us to Germany to visit our newest staff members. I am on the Board for our newly minted GoodSeed Germany office, so it was good to spend more time with the people who will be the boots on the ground as this ministry gets started in Europe. While in Germany we had some meetings but also did some video work about one of our new staff couples who came to know the Gospel when they were given the German edition of “The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus”. We want to tell their story on video and so captured some of the background “b-roll” footage in Germany and will finish the narration of the story in our studio in Alberta in the coming months.

In the coming weeks I’ll start publishing some of the photos and some videos from the trip on our blog (http://www.troyandnaomi.com) and our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/gstroynaomi). Stay tuned!

P.S.  Today is our eldest daughter’s ninth birthday! How have 9 years passed so quickly with her growing so big.

Ministry Update :: October 9, 2013

This past weekend we had the official launch for a new book: “In-ká-hai“. We are quite excited about this new book!

“In-ká-hai” is the true-life story of Pete and Leah Humphreys who spent 17 years working in the arid Chaco region of Paraguay. They were Bible teachers to the Manjúi. These tribal people had no knowledge of the Bible and were steeped in their traditional beliefs.

Despite being very careful to teach the Bible clearly, the Humphreys encountered problems. The Manjúi put on a veneer of Christianity but underneath, they clung to their animistic beliefs. They were mixing two belief systems together. What could Pete and Leah do? The Manjúis’ eventual trust in Jesus is an exciting story of front line ministry in action.

Learn what the Humphreys did to overcome the challenges and, more importantly, see how it is applicable to ordinary believers anywhere in the world today.

Our video department intern, Ken, was tasked with creating a trailer to explain and promote the book and we think he did a great job. The video is only 1:57 long, so please check it out.

God bless

Evangelism Seminar in Ontario

Last week I made my annual pilgrimage to Owen Sound, Ontario. For the last 12 years, the Word of Life Bible Institute has generously invited GoodSeed to teach a worldview evangelism course to their students. It helps give them the big picture of the overall story of God’s plan of salvation – giving a framework to hang the rest of their studies on through the rest of the year. This is a big commitment from the school, as they are giving us a full week at the beginning of their academic calendar (with no other classes happening!) to let us share with the students a fuller explanation of the Gospel and demonstrate how they can share this message with others. We really appreciate this opportunity and the ministry partnership!

There were 30 students from across Canada (including 3 from the town we now live in), as well as one from Brazil. This year we also had three guests join us, one driving about 9 hours to get to the seminar.

We walked the students through the Gospel, from Creation to the life of Christ using GoodSeed’s book “By this Name“. This year we got do do something a bit different. I’ve been editing video for awhile now to be included in the upcoming “By this Name -Interactive Edition” and Leader’s Guide, and we decided to beta-test them with the students. These clips include footage of teaching with visual aids to help comprehension, and footage from Israel and Egypt.

Here is a short sample:

This is what some of the students had to say at the conclusion of the seminar:

“[This study] very clearly and systematically ties the whole Bible together. Thank you very much for coming and teaching. I am excited about the material and have some people in mind who I would like to go thru it with.”

“It allows the learner to “visualize” how he/she would go about teaching this in a small group setting.”

“It made me realize how much the Bible is consistent all the way through. I thought it was cool how everything tied together into one thread.”
