precious baby girl

He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young. Is. 40:11

How graciously the Lord has led us these past six months since Naomi’s complications first began. Adelaine’s full term arrival is a miracle to us and we thank the Lord for His goodness. Already, we can’t imagine life without her! Naomi’s labour went quite well and she is recovering quickly. Adelaine has been a very content baby thus far. Ellie is quite excited about her little sister and loves to watch her and help mommy and daddy care for her. She often mimics what we do with Adelaine when she plays with her dolls. We’re so grateful for her enthusiastic acceptance of her new little sibling.

busy months ahead..
The students arrived back January 3 before heading down to New York for a challenging two-day Missions Conference at our main campus. Their time there resulted in many life-changing decisions being made, with over twenty students expressing a desire to serve the Lord in ministry.

The big challenge of this quarter is Snow Camp. Beginning on January 26, the students will be heavily involved in these six weekends of ministry to teens.

From March 9-19, Troy will be leading a group of students on the first WOLBI missions trip to Jamaica for ten days. They will be doing Bible clubs, open air evangelism and other outreaches into the community.

extreme makeover: basement edition
We feel as thrilled with our new basement room as those people on the reality TV show! It was incredible to see the Lord use you, His church, to bless us in so many different ways. In the end, we received just the right amount of money, came in just under budget, and the workers completed far more than we ever imagined. Ellie napped right through the banging and sawing and our hearts were encouraged and uplifted by the gifts we received and the men who came to help us out. To the right is a before and after photo of our basement. For a better look at this huge blessing, visit www.troyandnaomi.com/2006/12/extreme-makeover-basement-edition.html

Please pray:

  • for energy and stamina for the students during this busy quarter.
  • for Troy, as he pulls together the many details necessary to make the trip to Jamaica a success.
  • the students would be a blessing and would be challenged in their own lives.
  • for Naomi, as she stays home alone with Ellie and Adelaine during this time.

Ministry Update – Dec 4

School Update:
Fall Quarter is over and our students have gone home for Christmas break. We are very thankful for their efforts in ministry to others and their hard work in their Bible studies. Please pray that they will stay strong over break and come back refreshed and ready to go with another busy quarter in January.

Basement Update:
The basement project is done! Back in the summer we asked the Lord to help us raise $5,000 to allow us to use our basement as office and living space and a guest room in preparation for the arrival of our next child. The funds came in, and went out as we purchased building materials. Some good friends from Alberta flew in last week to do the construction work, and it is now all finished. Praise the Lord! A very sincere thank you to all who helped out financially and those who prayed for this project. And a special thanks to Andrew, Jack, Trevor, and Mitch who came to help us.

You can see photos of the construction project online at:

Personal Update:
We are now down to just a few weeks before the due date for our second child (21 days from today). With the basement done we can now work on preparing the nursery and get other things ready for this new arrival. We are really looking forward to meeting this little person. Please continue to pray for a smooth delivery and a healthy baby.

Thank you and God bless.

Troy, Naomi, and Ellie.

Extreme Makeover :: Basement Edition

Several months ago we started raising funds to add a room to our basement in preparation to the addition to our family. Many people generously responded by sending in money so that we could purchase the supplies needed. Naomi’s brother and some good friends from Alberta traveled here to do the construction.

The house we are living in is located on the Word of Life property and is a small three bedroom house (really a double wide trailer, 20′ x 40′). It does have a full basement underneath that was just used for storage as it was very cold.

Our basement as it was

The house also had a very steep set of stairs. The layout of the house never included stairs to a basement so the only space large enough was a pantry area, and it wasn’t long enough to give headroom for a normal set of stairs. The steps made most people uncomfortable, especially if you have to carry laundry downstairs. We wanted to make the basement more accessible for our guests and our kids as they get older. This was going to be a major challenge for the crew.

The Crew :: Andrew, Mitch, Jack, & Trevor

Day 1 :: Wednesday
The plan calls for a 20′ x 20′ room, with a small mud room for around the door. This is half the basement, and will equal the space that is used upstairs for our kitchen, dining area, and living room.. a rather large increase to our usable living space!

The first task was to put down a floor on which we would build the walls.

While the floor was going down, Naomi’s brother, Andrew, began work on the steps. The only way to improve these things was to increase headroom. To make the stairs less steep, we decided that the steps would have to turn as they went down, so we had to sacrifice part of a hall closet.

Andrew preparing for the new stairs :: the view from the closet.

After the floor was completed, it was time to begin framing the walls.

Danger! :: Troy with power tools.

One of my favorite parts: destruction. We had to remove the old stairs, so after swinging the sledge hammer a few times, I had busted it up enough to pull them down.

End of Day 1: stairs removed, subfloor and framing complete.

Day 2 :: Thursday

Andrew and Trevor make plans for how the stairs will work.. not an easy task.

Meanwhile, Jack is beginning to install the heaters for the room and prepare for the rest of the wiring.

Trevor works on the support for the landing while Troy works on bending nails..

We were concerned about how Ellie would handle all this noise and commotion and how it would affect her day and her naps. Turns out she loved it. It seems like she slept better with the saws and the hammering and banging. She would hear a saw and say “tactor”, thinking it was a tractor outside. She also enjoyed watching everything and sometimes got upset when the door was closed.

Ellie supervising her workers from behind the safety barricade.

Mitch ran the wiring for us as Andrew and Trevor focused on the engineering of the steps and Jack continued with the electrical system for the basement.

At the end of Day 2 the basement looked like this:

Ellie was uncharacteristically friendly with everyone right away, especially with Mitch. I’ll be watching out for this guy!

Day 3 :: Friday

Insulation goes in and we start putting the paneling up.

I was worried about these Albertans and their healthy lungs. I provided each with an Ontario Smog Filter on their arrival.

Mitch helps with the paneling by nailing them on.

The stairs start to take shape..

.. and so does the room.

Day 4 :: Saturday
It’s Saturday and Trevor’s daughter, Missy, who is attending the BI is coerced into helping us with the painting..

while Mitch does more destructive things.

I took Ellie down the hallway to the closet that has been gutted. “Ellie, I always told you there was a monster in the closet, well.. here he is.”

Day 6 & 7 :: Monday & Tuesday
Suspended ceiling is installed with the lighting (WOL had quite a few pallets of ceiling tile donated!)

and the steps are almost complete.

The carpet was also put down and trim installed.

In the middle of all this, we had septic problems and the tank had to be dug up. Coming back from supper I found this in the yard.. I had hoped for something more profound on my grave marker..

“All that remains of him – not much!
T Johnstone”
Hmm.. I think Trevor might have something to do with this..

Day 8 :: Wednesday
The last day. The guys leave in the afternoon and the final push is on to get stuff finished. By noon it was pretty much finished and we had put in the hide-a-bed that Naomi’s mom has been sleeping on, a desk and a book shelf.

This project went very fast! They worked hard to get things done, and, praise the Lord, we were able to finish it!

To those who donated to and/or prayed for this project, thank you. We couldn’t have done much without the supplies. And a special thanks to the guys who gave up a week of their time and flew here to help us. We really appreciate all that you and the Lord have done for us.

Troy, Naomi, and Ellie.

This weekend in the WOL world..

..was a very busy weekend. Testify, a student ministry team that shares with music and drama, were out in a couple of different churches. They were able to minister to a few youth groups and also in a Sunday morning service. The brought back 10 info cards from young people interested in the Bible Institute. More importantly, one young person got saved through the sharing of the Gospel. Other student teams were active in churches around the area here. In the French division of our ministry, there was a Moonlight Madness event held in Montreal, a large rally for youth. Over 450 Quebec teens were in attendance for games and activities and a presentation of the Gospel, with several making decisions about their eternal future. In the Maritimes there was a Word of Life SuperBowl with around 2300 teens. This is our largest single event, and this year we had 119 teenagers believe in Christ as their personal Savior.

Praise the LORD , all you nations;
extol him, all you peoples.
For great is his love toward us,
and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever.
Praise the LORD .

Prayer Letter – October 2006

…for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the heart knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
Romans 8:26-28

DEAR FAMILY AND FRIENDS,
The verse above has held very deep meaning for us these last few months. As we have sought to trust the Lord in our circumstances, we have gained a deeper appreciation for the Comforter and Interceder the Lord has given us.

BASEMENT PROJECT
As we shared in our last prayer letter, we are hoping to finish a part of our basement to make room for the newest little Johnstone. You responded with great generosity. We are happy to tell you that we’ve had enough funds come in to enable us to complete the first phase (enclosing the basement for an office/guest room) of this project. Thank you so much for enabling us in this area. We are hoping to have it completed by the end of November, when a work team from Olds, AB plans to come to assist us.

NAOMI’S PREGNANCY
We also shared with you some serious complications Naomi had encountered in her pregnancy. Considering the risks associated with the pregnancy, we are amazed and excited to tell you that it’s progressing well. Our moms have been such a help, taking turns staying with us to help out with Ellie and around the house. Naomi is now 7 months along, due December 25. When Naomi first had the placental abruption, the haematoma covered an area of 15 cm. This was a huge abruption according to our doctor and the odds of the pregnancy continuing to where it is now were not good. According to the latest ultrasound, the area of the haematoma has shrunk to 2 cm! What a huge answer to prayer! In fact, Naomi was told at her most recent appointment that she can feel free to resume normal levels of activity as she’s able. We are very thankful to the Lord for this and grateful to you who have prayed so faithfully with us.

TEACHING FAITHFUL MEN & WOMEN TO TEACH OTHERS ALSO
The Lord has also certainly answered our prayers regarding a good class for this year. We currently have 46 students and they seem eager to learn, grow and minister.

Troy had the opportunity once again to help teach a week of classes to prepare them to clearly share their faith. He and John Cross taught through By This Name, a book GoodSeed is developing to communicate the Gospel in our post-modern era.

The group just completed their week of Open Air Evangelism in Toronto and Hamilton. They returned with many stories of what they learned and how the Lord enabled them to speak with so many about their faith. More than 35 adults and children expressed a desire to trust Christ as their Savior, for which we thank the Lord.

Last weekend, our students attended our annual Youth Missions Extravaganza, a day dedicated to challenging young people to consider what their role may be in reaching others for Christ. Seventeen of our students expressed a desire to be involved in missions in some capacity. We look forward to seeing what the Lord will do in their lives over the coming year!

Naomi & Ellie out for a walk.
Ellie’s Corner: Ellie continues to grow and learn new things daily. We talk to her often about the coming baby and how she’ll be a big sister, however she’s a bit young to understand. Ellie is still a very laid-back, cheerful girl. She loves to find a cloth and “clean” around the house. Mommy hopes this trend continues. She has loved having her grandmas around. She also enjoys being around the students, though she is a bit shy. They seem to enjoy her too—we’ve had many offers to babysit.

Thank you for your prayers and support.
