Epic Road Trip – Alberta to New Brunswick

Epic Road Trip Progress :: Alberta to New Brunswick

A progress report as we make our way east across Canada!

Day One: Olds AB to Outlook SK

A perfect first day on the road! Beautiful weather, kids were enjoying themselves, great scenery, and a cool river at the campsite. At the end of the day we lay in bed congratulating ourselves for a wonderful first day, thinking this is going to be a great trip!

Day Two: Outlook SK to Virden MB

Day two started with the first attack of vertigo for Troy since mid-May. It got pretty strong quite quickly, and after some time of being violently ill, he needed some sleep. This threw off our timeline and meant Naomi had to pack up pretty much on her own, during which Adelaine burned her hand and one kid got lost in the campground!

Day Three: Virden MB to Dryden ON

Off the flatlands and into Ontario. We stayed in a hotel that night for a change.

Day Four: DrydenĀ  to Geraldton

Another bad vertigo attack part way on the road held us up for a few hours, but we eventually got underway again.

Day Five: Geraldton to South Porcupine

Lots of rain and long stretches of nothing but trees. Vertigo came again just after we arrived at some family’s house!

Day Six: South Porcupine to Huntsville

Day Seven: Huntsville to Owen Sound

Day Eight: Surprise trip to Canada’s Wonderland

We managed to find a one day sale for tickets and got them for 60% off. The kids had never been to a park nearly as big as this, so this was a great surprise for them. Vertigo hit Troy just as they got to the parking lot of Canada’s Wonderland, so he spent a couple hours resting in the First Aid station on a cot. Very thankful for the quiet rest.

Day Nine: Visiting around Owen Sound and Durham

Day Ten: Speaking at South End Fellowship Baptist Church and then to Stouffville

A great visit with people at church and for lunch, then a drive to Stouffville. Stopped by Word of Life to walk around briefly and show the kids where the girls lived when they were very young and where they should plan on going to Bible School someday. Ran into a couple Albertans while there too. On our drive we also saw a funnel cloud!

Unfortunately, vertigo visited again just as we were pulling up to the house we would be staying at for a couple nights.

Stouffville to Ottawa

We were delayed leaving Stouffville for a day as I had another vertigo attack when we arrived Sunday night, and then again Tuesday morning as we were packing to go. An extra day for rest was great, and we really enjoyed the visit.

We had to pause to consider what to do with two more vertigo attacks. I have been averaging one every 1.5 days. But after consideration, we decided to press on.

Before the vertigo on Tuesday, I got to fellowship with some men from Springvale Baptist Church for a early morning prayer meeting.

We arrived late afternoon in Ottawa and got to walk around and see a few sights. If the health holds up, we hope to go back in the morning.

Day Thirteen: Ottawa to Sainte-MƩlanie

A day in Ottawa and a tour of the Parliament building (unfortunately we could only get in on a French language one), and a quick visit to the Royal Canadian Mint. Woke up in the middle of the night feeling dizzy, but thankfully it didn’t get too far.

After a day around Ottawa, we hit the road for a campground that would get us a couple hours closer to our next stop, Quebec City.

Day Fourteen: St MƩlanie to Montmagony

A fairly quick stop in Quebec City where we walked around parts of the Plains of Abraham, took a tour of the Citadel, and drove our van – with the trailer! – through parts of the old city, which has the oldest streets of North America. It was a bit tight as we drove past buildings made in the 1640’s, but we made it.

Day Fifteen: Montmagony QC to Moncton NB

5950 km, and we made it!

We had to take a photo of the Quebec sign on the New Brunswick border as our first time into Quebec was a very busy bridge in Ottawa. We also stoppedĀ  by in Saint-Louis-du-Ha! Ha!. Just because.

After two weeks and a day, it will be good to get off the road for a bit. So thankful for safety over these many kilometers.
