Fall Cleanup

Leaves. We have lots of them at our new house. I now suddenly understand the reason someone decided to invent the leaf blower! I have raked the yard about 4 or 5 times now, and the snow has mercifully covered up the latest crop so I can forget about it until spring. But a few weeks ago, the weather was warmer and the kids came outside while I was raking to “help”.

“Help” from Ethan usually amounted to him waiting until I had a nice big pile of leaves, then he would shuffle his feet through the middle, do a sharp turn and attack the pile from a different direction, thereby ensuring maximum leaf dispersion.

The girls were only too happy to carry armfuls of leaves onto my deck, but when asked to put them in the compost heap they would break out in a chorus of discontent.

I really didn’t mind of course. Their best efforts at chaos only take a minute to reorganize and we are thrilled to have a big yard for them to play in.

Gardening

Posted by Naomi

I always thought of myself as having a black thumb, since house plants experience a steady decline from the moment they enter our home.

In other words, I kill plants.

So I figured any vegetable garden I planted would face a similar doom under my care. Instead, I discovered that I really enjoyed gardening. The excitement of planting a tiny seed and actually see the thing sprout, then the satisfaction of harvesting tasty organic vegetables in the end was definitely worth the minimal effort on my part (read: I get lazy about weeding). I’ve learned a lot about what not to do and a few things that I found worked well. The kids enjoyed helping me plant and harvest, especially Adelaine.

Ellie’s imagination would take off soon after work commenced and she’d forget that she was supposed to be helping.

And Ethan, well, Ethan was better at stomping on my plants than helping them to grow – at least the plants had to develop strong roots to withstand his trampling!

Adelaine, on the other hand, is a very hard worker when she sets her mind to it and she was a great help with planting my onions, shallots and garlic, and then later harvesting my potatoes. I have no clue how well my garden did – I have nothing to compare it to – but I would say we were at least successful at growing some lovely food and I look forward to another garden next year!

Sleeping with bears

Sometimes in the night there is a little gremlin that sneaks out of her bed and rummages about for clothes for herself or her friends. It isn’t uncommon to find her with four layers of clothes on in the morning. The other night she sought out clothes for three vintage Care Bears (I say vintage because they are probably 20+ years old, donated to the gremlin’s collection by Auntie Alana).

With all these bears (and other dolls and animals) there is barely any room for the little night gremlin to sleep.

The question is: did Adelaine intentionally colour coordinate the shirts for the bears in the dark?

Easter

“What? A pink comb?!?”

The kids’ aunts and Nanna sent out a ton of new clothes for the kids with Auntie Stacy for her visit, including new Easter Sunday outfits. After church we headed out to get some photos of the kids.

Later on we had some friends over for lunch and we took the kids outside to find their Resurrection Eggs, little plastic eggs with little visual aids inside to help teach them the Easter story (i.e. strip of leather to remind us of Jesus being whipped, nails to remind us of the cross, etc).

After the egg hunt we came back inside to review the Easter story.

It was a really nice day for us. The girls were really into the day and understood the importance of Easter, with Adelaine repeatedly saying excitedly that, “Jesus died on the cross for our sins!” We also got to spend the day with family (Auntie Stacy) and some good friends. Thank you Lord for a wonderful day of remembering your love for us.
